On Monday, after hours on the phone with American Airlines, they re-booked their flight to fly out on Saturday out of Madrid, which was one of the only airports open in Europe. This meant a Eurostar train ride from London to Paris
(2 1/2 hours) and then a train ride from Paris to Madrid (13 hours). Once they had this plan, they spent three hours at the Eurostar office to purchase a one-way ticket to Paris. By the time they got back to our place that night, there was already some talk on the news about the UK airspace opening by mid-week. However, by Tuesday morning, things were not looking good again and the news was saying that the volcano was erupting stronger this time and there would be another ash cloud heading over the UK. By Tuesday night, this had once again changed and the UK airspace was going to be open by the end of the week and they were currently running test flights. The girls decided to then re-book their flight out of London, instead of Madrid, for Friday in hopes that London airports would be open. By Wednesday, there was some good news that flights were starting to arrive and depart in London. On Thursday morning the news was advising that the airports were getting back to normal, so they took a chance to call American Airlines to see if they could get out earlier and surprisingly enough got re-booked on a flight for that evening!!!
They were FINALLY getting home!!
