{Bulletin Boards}
During the time that I was in Year 1, I had to change the bulletin boards to what we were currently learning about.
TOPIC is the creative curriculum that is very widespread amongst the schools in London. Most of the schools here are changing their curriculum to be based on the creative curriculum and all the core subjects should revolve around the creative curriculum. It's very different than the US, but a neat approach and definitely gives students a more creative approach to learning. One of the TOPICS while I was in Year 1 was Talking Time, which focused on teaching about the past and present. This is one of the reasons why we made those timecapsules.

Numeracy or Maths (yes with an 's') is what they call Math here. The bulletin board was from when we were working on Measuring and they were using their hands to measure in cubes.

RE is their Religious Education (yes it is a Catholic school and I had to say prayers with them three times a day). It's not like our Catholic schools in the US, it's still considered a public school, there is no tuition, and anyone can go to the school. The recent RE theme was Messangers and Witnesses and so they were learning about how important messages are and what are the ways messages are shared. They came up with good ways to share messages, which are all the pictures, and then they each wrote a message, which is what all the colored strips are in the green box!

{Literacy Plans}
They really don't teach English as a subject in the primary grades here (a little crazy, I know), so Literacy is their version of English but really focuses on everyday life activites and correlates with what the TOPIC is. For this particular lesson, we were learning about the five senses and did an activity specifically for taste and smell. The students really loved the taste activity. I had six kinds of fruit that they had to walk around and taste. Then they had to write down some describing words on their individual white boards!

Here's some of their results...

They were real serious about this activity and surprisingly very quiet. The really enjoyed it and all the fruit was gone!
Then the next day we did an activity on smell. I put out glass containers with five different things for them to smell. They really liked this one too, but it took a little more concentration!
I'm not even really sure what you call this...it's something that people here spread on their toast, it smells nasty!!

These three were ready to drink what was in the containers...I had to keep reminding them how to smell something!!
It was a fun two days in Literacy!!
How awesome! What a wonderful experience for you Lisa! They are lucky to have you as their teacher!
